A System for the Epilepsy Patients Using RF Communication

Abstract:

The aim of this project is to design the system for the epilepsy patients using RF communication. The wireless electronic diagnosing system designed here is exclusively meant for epilepsy patients. The system helps them in accurately predicting the occurrence of seizures

Description:

Epilepsy is a very fatal condition which is caused as a result of imbalance in the nervous system. The very common symptoms of epilepsy includes sudden fluctuations in Heart Beat rate and involuntary muscular movements (seizures). The aura (practical symptom) of epilepsy includes fluctuations in heartbeat, nausea, dizziness etc.

Sudden occurrence of seizures during driving may lead to accidents and its occurrence during sleeping hours can even lead to the patient's death, if no immediate, proper attention is provided by a bystander or a doctor. With the aid of this system, the patient can lead a normal life.

The electronic system presented here is a wearable device which predicts the occurrence of epilepsy in a few minutes advance. The device utilizes the signals from human body to detect the occurrence of epilepsy.

As soon as the device detects the symptoms, it transmits a coded signal. The signal is decoded by a wireless receiver to produce control signals for switching an alarm device, mobile messaging device and an automatic vehicle control system.

Technology:

Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) are free scale's enabling technology for acceleration and pressure sensors. MEMS based sensor products provide an interface that can sense, process or control the surrounding environment.

MEMS-based sensors are a class of devices that builds very small electrical and mechanical components on a single chip. MEMS-based sensors are a crucial component in automotive electronics, medical equipment, hard disk drives, computer peripherals, wireless devices and smart portable electronics such as cell phones and PDAs.

MEMS technology provides the following advantages - cost-efficiency, low power, miniaturization, high performance, and integration. Functionality can be integrated on the same silicon or in the same package, which reduces the component count. This contributes to overall cost savings .

Hence the benefit of the project is that a lightweight, rugged, low cost, which helps a victim of epilepsy patients

Biomedical Sleep Inducer

Abstract:

Sleeping difficulty, called insomnia, can involve difficulty falling asleep when you first go to bed at night, waking up too early in the morning, and waking up often during the night. The lack of restful sleep can affect your ability to carry out daily responsibilities because you are too tired or have trouble concentrating. All types of insomnia can lead to daytime drowsiness, poor concentration, and the inability to feel refreshed and rested in the morning. Magnetic field associated with the Earth is called Geo-magnetic fields. It is essentially dipolar (i.e., it has two poles, the northern and southern magnetic poles) on the Earth's surface. Away from the surface, the field becomes distorted. Many people experience sleeping well in natural surroundings, into a tent or a wooden hut. This fact is due not only to the healthy atmosphere but also from our unconscious ability to perceive natural Earth’s magnetic fields. Our mini project generates this type of Geo-magnetic-fields and our aim is to perceive them: in this manner our brain is surrounded by an ideal environment for a sound sleep.

Features of Sleep Inducer:
  • Generates a natural electromagnetic-field
  • Makes easier to fall asleep
  • Induces a prolonged and sound sleep without drugs
  • No side effects

Highlights of the Project:
This project helps in fighting insomnia. Apart from this it also supports relaxation, stress management and induces sleep easily. This project generates type of geo-magnetic-fields and it helps the brain surrounded by an ideal environment for a sound sleep.

Low Cost Solar ECG with Bluetooth Transmitter

Abstract:

Cardiovascular disease is the world's leading killer, accounting for 16.7 million or 29.2 per cent of total global deaths every year. The World Health Organization estimates that 60 percent of the world's cardiac patients will be Indian by 2010. The reported prevalence of coronary heart disease (CHD) in adult surveys has risen 4-fold over the last 40 years and even in rural areas the prevalence has doubled over the past 30 years.

The Electrocardiograph (ECG) is a diagnostic instrument which measures the electrical activity of the heart, providing valuable information of cardiac disorders like infarction, Atherosclerosis, etc. ECG instruments used in hospitals are bulky, work on line voltage which makes the ECG waveform distorted and an isolation amplifier is needed for patient's safety making it expensive thus cannot be used in underdeveloped areas. We have developed an inexpensive portable solar powered ECG.

63% of all rural households in India do not have electricity and use fuel for lighting. Thus, being solar powered will eliminate its dependence on electricity and can easily be used in areas either with no electricity or with lots of load shedding. The electro-cardiogram will be free from the line frequency noise. Advantage of this equipment is the backup option of charging the batteries using a simple mobile charger. The device is capable of acquiring up to 34 hours of continuous electrocardiogram data at a sample rate of 500 Hz. The ECG is also transmitted to the patient's cell phone or a computer with the help of a Bluetooth transmitter

Simple Heart Beat Classifier Based on ECG

Abstract:

In this paper, we studied and validated a simple heart beat classifier based on ECG feature models selected with the focus on an improved generalization capability. We considered features from the RR series, as well as features computed from the ECG samples and different scales of the wavelet transform, at both available leads.

The classification performance and generalization were studied using publicly available databases: the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia, the MIT-BIH Supraventricular Arrhythmia, and the St. Petersburg Institute of Cardiological Technics (INCART) databases. The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation recommendations for class labeling and results presentation were followed.

A floating feature selection algorithm was used to obtain the best performing and generalizing models in the training and validation sets for different search configurations. The best model found comprehends eight features, was trained in a partition of the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia, and was evaluated in a completely disjoint partition of the same database.

The results obtained were: global accuracy of 93%; for normal beats, sensitivity (S) 95%, positive predictive value (P+) 98%; for supraventricular beats, S 11%, P+ 39%; and for ventricular beats S 81%, P+ 87%. In order to test the generalization capability, performance was also evaluated in the INCART, with results comparable to those obtained in the test set.

This classifier model has fewer features and performs better than other state-of-the-art methods with results suggesting better generalization capability.

An Infant Monitoring System Using CO2 Sensors

Abstract:

In this paper, an infant monitoring system was proposed to reduce the potential risks for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). This system can be used for infants at home or in a hospital nursery room. The system consists of carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors and active radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. A commercial metal-oxide based CO2 sensor was chosen and characterized in sensitivity, selectivity and humidity dependence. A proof-of-concept system, to be used for two infants in the same room, was designed and assembled. The RFID transmission was accomplished with a wireless module at two different operating frequencies. The results are promising. A method for further practical applications in a large nursery room is also discussed .

Infant Incubator Parameter Sensing And Monitoring Through Wireless:
A system was designed which comprises of essential hardware and software for monitoring the parameters through wireless Communication.

To control the temperature of the air adjacent an infant in an incubator.is to circulate the air within an incubator with a blower driven by a motor and to vary the blower speed based on the temperature of the air within the incubator.

Thermistors for sensing air temperature and motor controllers are known and have been used to control the temperature of the air adjacent an infant in an incubator and to reduce the blower speed and thereby the associated noise in the enclosure.

It is also necessary to monitor the CO2 Level in the incubator frequently, so that if the CO2 Level increases, In such a case, a oxygen valve is also actuated , for the infant to breathe properly.

We have to attach transducers to infants in an incubator to directly measure the infants temperature, respiration rate, pulse, and other physiological parameters and sent to a remote computer through wireless for processing the data.

Sensors Involved in Measurement:
1. Co2 Sensor
2. Thermistor
3. Heart Beat Sensor

Electrocardiogram-Assisted Blood Pressure Estimation

Abstract:

Accurate automatic noninvasive assessment of blood pressure (BP) presents a challenge due to conditions like arrhythmias, obesity, and postural changes that tend to obfuscate arterial amplitude pulsations sensed by the cuff. Researchers tried to overcome this challenge by analyzing oscillometric pulses with the aid of a higher fidelity signal-the electrocardiogram (ECG). Moreover, pulse transit time (PTT) was employed to provide an additional method for BP estimation. However, these methods were not fully developed, suitably integrated, or tested.

To address these issues, we present a novel method whereby ECG-assisted oscillometric and PTT (measured between ECG R-peaks and maximum slope of arterial pulse peaks) analyses are seamlessly integrated into the oscillometric BP measurement paradigm. The method bolsters oscillometric analysis (amplitude modulation) with more reliable ECG R-peaks provides a complementary measure with PTT analysis (temporal modulation) and fuses this information for robust BP estimation. We have integrated this technology into a prototype that comprises a BP cuff with an embedded conductive fabric ECG electrode, associated hardware, and algorithms.

A pilot study has been undertaken on ten healthy subjects (150 recordings) to validate the performance of our prototype against United States Food and Drug Administration approved Omron oscillometric monitor (HEM-790IT). Our prototype achieves mean absolute difference of less than 5 mmHg and grade A as per the British Hypertension Society protocol for estimating BP, with the reference Omron monitor.

Zigbee Based Patient Analysing System with WAP

Abstract:

This project is used to scan the complete parameters of a person in an ICU ward through Zigbee Technology. The name "ZigBee" is derived from the erratic zigging patterns many bees make between flowers when collecting pollen. This is evocative of the invisible webs of connections existing in a fully wireless environment. ZigBee is the name of a specification for a suite of high level communication protocols using small, low-power digital radios based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard for wireless personal area networks (WPANs), such as wireless headphones connecting with cell phones via short-range radio. The technology is intended to be simpler and cheaper than other WPANs, such as Bluetooth. ZigBee is targeted at radio-frequency (RF) applications which require a low data rate, long battery life, and secure networking.

Project Description:

This project is a working model which incorporates sensors to measure all these parameters like Body temperature, Respiratory Temp, Saline Status, ECG and Heart Beat rate and transfer it to the computer, so that the patient condition can be analyzed to by doctors in any part of the hospital wherever they are. Thus it reduces doctors work load and also gives more accurate results, wherever there is an abnormality felt by the patient, we have also incorporated saline monitoring system which gives an alarm when the saline bottle about to empty.

More over K-Sheet Automation is automatically done, since all the parameters are completely monitored through a computer, it can be stored on a database for periodic intervals with respect to the current date and time.

A new system called medicine reminder system is also incorporated in this project. An alarm will be energized, Whenever a particular patient should be given medicines. This can be done for multiple patients also by assigning the intervals for the patient to a database.

An Emergency patient calling switch is also included here.

Whenever the patients finds emergency he needs to press the button on his side, so that the particular patients room number and will be indicated to the doctors room.

There is an Anesthesia injection Module Which is interfaced with the System, can be commanded by the controller to extract the exact amount of anesthetic fluid to the syringe.

Modules:

  • Sensors and Transducers
  • Signal Conditioning Board
  • PIC Micro-controller Interface Board
  • Power Supply
  • Relay, alarm and its Driver Circuits
  • Anesthesia Injection Module

Advantages of Zigbee Based Patient Analysing System with WAP:

  1. 8 independent analog channels available. (For future Enhancements)
  2. All the Parameters can be viewed on the Mobile phone
  3. Annunciation’s systems are included for all this analog inputs
  4. Heart Beat Rate of the Patient
  5. Saline status is displayed in the monitor.
  6. On-line graphics for selectable parameters.
  7. On-line recording of all process parameters in the interval selectable by the user, which is most useful for future analysis and failure detection
